This is from an article posted in November, that I thought I would pass along to you:

- If you are shopping anywhere near nighttime and you are going to be in the store past dark, park closer to the stores. The best case scenario is that you park near a light post so if you come out after dark, you are near a visible, well-lit area.

- Before you get out of your car, make sure you do not leave anything in sight. When you come back, peek inside your car to make sure no one is there.

- Put whatever you bought in the trunk. If you have an SUV or van, take a blanket to cover up your items.

- Always be sure to have your key or key fob out and accessible.

- Travel light. When you go to the store, take only what you need such as a driver's license, a credit card, and a minimal amount of cash.

- If you insist on carrying a full size purse or bag, put it over your shoulder because that makes it a harder target for thieves.

- If you are heading to or from your car and you feel threatened, whatever you do, do not go back to your car. Get back to the store because safety is in numbers. A lot of people make the mistake where they think the car is the safe haven. They run to it and they lock the doors but a window can be broken out easily.

- Absolutely shop with a buddy. If you are going to make it an all day shopping trip and you come out to your car to unload your first armful of goodies, people are going to be out in the parking lot watching for that. Take an opportunity and take little break from shopping. Drive around and maybe get some lunch. Or perhaps drive around to a different parking location altogether before going back in and refilling.

- While it is the season of giving, be wary of panhandlers or solicitors. The thing to remember is the vast majority of them, especially around holiday time, are scammers. If you feel compelled to donate, donate locally. But when you are dealing with these folks that are approaching you on the street, often times they are working with accomplices. What they are waiting for is for you to pull out your wallet, open up and show how much cash you have, and the next thing you know it is snatched out of your hands. If you are accosted by a panhandler, notify the store or mall manager or call police. You may be saving the next person from a hassle or worse.
.
- It is best to limit your cash while shopping. These days, more people want to use cash so they do not run up credit card bills. You can always cancel a debit or credit card if it is stolen. Unfortunately, you cannot stop payment on stolen cash. If you insist on using cash, try keeping it in a front pocket.

List of shopping safety tips:

· Carry only what you need (license, credit card, minimal cash)
· Carry it in your pocket, if possible
· Use wristlet, or purse that can be slung across your body
· Always keep car locked
· Have keys in hand, be aware of your surroundings
· Glance inside vehicle before getting in
· Exercise is good, but opt for spot closer to store building, preferably near light
· If you sense danger, don't run to vehicle for safe haven, run back inside store
· Put items in trunk, rather than plain view in car
· If driving van/SUV, you should keep a blanket inside anyway, throw it over your bags to help camouflage
· Extensive shopping; when dropping off packages in car, consider taking a little break and moving your car (suspects will monitor parking lots)

Panhandlers:

· Almost always scammers
· Often work with accomplices
· "Just say no", practice your response so you're ready
· Your purse may get snatched as you open it to get money·

If you feel compelled to donate, give to a local charity and refer panhandler toward proper source for help
· Notify store/mall manager, or call police

Long Island Private Investigator

Private Investigator Long Island
Private Investigator Long Island
View more preentations These asset types include simple searches of properties (homes, buildings, etc) and further include savings, checking and all "in-bank" accounts such as CD's. They also include brokerage firm type accounts such as stocks, on-line accounts (such as e-trade) and many other types of investment accounts.
When performed correctly, these investigations do take up to 10 days to complete, as they are obviously vast in scope.
So next time you are told that no one can find assets, tell them they are mistaken and refer them to this post or to:
Private Investigator Long Island
or
Suffolk County Private Investigator

Cheating and Infidelity Investigations

Are your suspicions really warranted?
Is he/she cheating? Maybe...then again..maybe not. We can find out by conducting surveillance, documenting actions with video, photo, Global Positioning satellite technology and computer forensics.
Common Signs, aside from the obvious perfume smell or lipstick. Those are easy and obvious. But what about the careful cheater? What about the experienced ones who have already been caught and know how to avoid the mistakes they previously made?
Here are some signs:

Sex drive has increased or decreased recently (yes, it can be either)

Picks a fight in order to storm out of the house. (Guess where he/she's going?)

Suspicious cell phone calls from restricted numbers

Finds excuses to leave the house that he never used to use. (He wants privacy on the cell phone)

If you have sex, something has changed. A new act or position. (Something new learned? If so, from who?)

Suddenly works overtime (used to hate it and tried to avoid it) Now he/she loves it and works late often.

Suddenly has an interest in his/her appearance. Maybe goes to the gym, wears nicer clothes, cleaned his car inside and out and never has before. Is your significant other trying to impress someone?

Short tempered and never was before

Runs out of vacation or sick time at work(It was used for secret meetings with the "other")

These are just a few signs. If you suspect lies and cheating, hire a professional to get the truth.

Private Investigator Long Island and how bad weather helps surveillance

Most people don't realize this, but inclement weather actually enhances the covert capabilities of physical mobile surveillance.
On a bright sunny day, visibility is great, people can look around at their surroundings, etc. This can heighten there sense of awareness and may notice a surveillance a bit easier than rain or snowy conditions. Experience has shown, and studies by law enforcement have confirmed that when the weather is bad, people generally drive in a more cautious manner, paying increased attention to the road, rather than their surroundings. This, coupled with the obvious reduction of visibility, easily creates a condition known to be surveillance friendly to anyone conducting surveillance.
So contrary to widely popular beliefs, rainy days are GREAT days to conduct mobile surveillance.
Posted by Private Investigator Long Island

Hiring

We are still looking for one more qualified, experienced investigator who is New York City based. type='text'>Privacy and Facebook

I just returned from Disney World in Florida where I spent a few days conducting a surveillance (yea, I know..tough assignment). Throughout the entire trip, I was amazed..repeatedly, by the amount of people who were on their smart phones with Facebook apps open. Every line I was on (and there were many) and every place I sat, had several..yes several, people posting to their Facebook accounts. I couldn't help but to eavesdrop, since they were everywhere. It was obvious that these people were announcing to the world, where they were and what they were doing.
First..Who really gives a rats ass! Are you trying to tell me that people on their friends lists really care that they just got off Dumbo and are on line at the Tea Cups? Really? They care that the lines are so short? Or how you just ate a Mickey's Premium Ice Cream?
OK, so this same scenario repeated itself dozens of times throughout the trip.
Next point..I can't understand why people have basically given up the right to privacy..voluntarily. We have laws in this country that were hard fought to enact, that allow us privacy. Social media has not only taken that right away, but has convinced the masses that it's a great thing. I'm sorry, but I find this to be ridiculous.
My opinion..post to Facebook when you have something to say. But not every time you wipe your ass or your baby burps, no less telling everyone your location, actions and feelings on those actions, every hour of the day. How about trying a phone call or waiting to see someone face-to-face? You know..real human interaction.
Have we lost that?

Google Places Page for Long Island Private Investigator

Our Places Page on Google Maps is up and running after a total rehab.
Check it out here

Long Island Investigations Hiring

Looking for former NYPD personnel to conduct investigations within New York City. Well of course we do. But any good investigator stays put if at all possible. Reason being, if you've been on surveillance for hours, you know if you leave, chances are you'll miss something. So what do we do? Simple; use a coffee cup (Starbucks grande works great) or a snapple bottle. What I use is even better. I use a "port a john" or "Travel John." It's made for just such a situation. Yep, that's what we do. Maybe a little crude, but it's the way it is.
I use tint and shades to assure privacy, if you can call it that.
BTW, I always have water, paper towels and Purell for sanitary reasons. Here's a re-post that may help you keep safe during this season. Remember, it's a prime and busy season for thieves too!
Holiday Shopping Safety Tips
Take Extra Precaution

The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

Crime Prevention

Shopping during the holiday season can present it's own form of danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season safe.

The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime.

Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

Dress casually and comfortably.

Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.

Always carry your California Driver License or Identification Card along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.

Keep cash in your front pocket.

Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit.

Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

Posted by:
Private Investigator Suffolk County NY
Private Investigator Nassau County NY
Private Investigator Long Island NY

New Web Site

We have updated our main site at Long Island Investigations
Hope you like the new look!
Happy Thanksgiving to all

Long Island Investigations Hiring

We are looking for experienced investigators.

We do not have a minimum retainer/hours fee for surveillance cases such as cheating spouses and insurance or workers compensation cases. She has spent more than a decade researching and writing about cheating spouses since discovering that her former husband was unfaithful.

Sure, some husbands would never cheat, while others would use any opportunity to stray, regardless of when. Houston, however, is referring to those "seasonal" cheaters who think they may have a better shot at not getting caught during summer.

Some are counting on hooking up with other women at the annual out-of-town business convention, or before they catch up with their wives and kids in the Hamptons, or during a fishing or camping trip with the fellas.

"These aren't men who are habitual cheaters," she says. "They're just looking for a summer fling... . It's fun to them. It's a sport, something they can do to break up the routine.

"If in any way it looks like they're going to get caught," she adds, "they won't take the chance."

She and others who study the hows and whys of infidelity agree that a marriage in which both spouses embrace values such as honesty and trust, communicate well, have quality time together and sustain a sizzling sex life could be enough to keep either from straying. (Though statistically a higher percentage of husbands cheat, the experts say plenty of wives also fool around, so husbands should keep their eyes open, too.)

The 2006 General Social Survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago found that twice as many husbands engage in "extramarital relations" as wives. In the scientific sampling of about 3,000 people, representing a cross section of the nation, 21.3 percent of males said they had sexual relations with someone else while they were married, while 12.5 percent of women said they had.

Even with a good marriage, the temptation to have a summer affair may be too strong for some husbands, Houston says, so wives can't be too vigilant. "Women should be proactive rather than reactive," she says. "Put the odds in your favor."

If you think your man may be considering having a summer fling, Houston says there are ways to confirm your suspicions -- and possibly prevent it.

For example, if your husband announces that his company picnic is coming up, don't blow it off -- go with him, she says. Your presence alone may be all it takes to keep your spouse from flirting with another woman -- or another woman from getting any ideas.

"The biggest and most important step is just showing up -- and not in a bad mood," says Houston, who includes such tips on her Web site, infidelityadvice.com. "Go. Stake your turf. Be at your loving best."

If your husband is home alone while you and the kids are away, check in with him from time to time -- by phone and in person.

"Come back unexpectedly, and let him know that you plan to come home periodically, but don't tell him when," she says.

If he's away, don't settle for having only his cell phone number, she says. "Cell phones are the greatest aid to infidelity ever invented other than the Internet. You want a land line. With a cell phone, he can be anywhere."

All this may sound a bit obsessive and paranoid, but Houston says it's more a word to the wise.

"It pays to be alert," she says. "You could be caught up in your own situations with the kids, with your girlfriends and with your career, and just overlook these things.

"The old thing that the wife is the last one to know? There's no reason for wives to be the last one to know if they are aware of things to look for."

"Mate-guarding"

And not only do wives have to beware of their husbands' roving eyes, but they also have to be on guard for women looking to have flings -- or something more -- with their husbands, say the authors of a new book.

In "You Can't Have Him -- He's Mine: A Woman's Guide to Affair-Proofing Her Relationship" (Adams Media), Marie Browne, a Westfield, N.J.-based marriage and family therapist and her daughter Marlene Browne, a divorce attorney in Plainfield, N.J., urge women to engage in "mate-guarding" and get between their mates and any would-be husband-poachers.

Marlene Browne practices what she preaches. After learning that her pilot-husband was scheduled on a flight with an attractive female first officer, she looked the woman up. "She looked like me 15 years ago," Browne says. "Why should I put my husband in that situation? Do I trust him? Sure. Do I want to put him in that situation? No!"

Instead, she told him her concerns, and he agreed to drop that flight, she says.

The Brownes also recommend that wives make it clear to potential interlopers that their husbands are spoken for. Give him a well-timed kiss in her presence, or ensure that his work space is full of photos of your family, or put handwritten notes in his briefcase or gym bag -- anything, Marlene Browne says, that would tell another woman to move on.

She also says wives should be clear with their husbands about the consequences of cheating: divorce, loss of assets, loss of his children.

Keep back doors shut

While some agree with the "detective" approach, others, including a self-proclaimed "bad boy" who admits to having cheated, say wives don't have to turn into bloodhounds to make their men behave faithfully. Instead, they say, wives should focus on keeping their marriages strong and healthy -- and husbands should hold up their end of the bargain, too.

Summer may offer unique opportunities for husbands thinking about cheating, but "if you're not happy, you can act out any time of the year," says Wayne M. Levine, director of the West Coast Men's Center in suburban Los Angeles and author of "Hold on to Your N.U.T.s [Non-negotiable, Unalterable Terms]: The Relationship Manual for Men" (BetterMen Press). If a man says fidelity is one of his nonnegotiable, unalterable terms, then he has to act that way, including closing all the "back doors" that could lead him to disrespect and disregard his relationship, Levine says.

"Back doors allow you to 'sneak out' and compromise on your commitments," he says. That includes sex with prostitutes, watching Internet porn, visiting online chat rooms, communicating with old girlfriends or flirting in the office. "They're distractions and energy drains. Any energy going out the back door is energy that's not going into your relationship.

"Don't expect the tide to turn until you make a real commitment and install a dead bolt on that back door."

Steve Santagati of Manhattan, author of "The Manual: A True Bad Boy Explains How Men Think, Date and Mate -- and What Women Can Do to Come Out on Top" (Crown), admits to cheating -- mostly during the spring and fall -- in several relationships.

Women who monitor their husbands' whereabouts to catch them cheating are using a Band-Aid approach, he says. "By the time you get to looking at their cell phones and e-mail and e-snooping, you have already lost the battle," he says.

"I cheated because I wanted to, and I cheated because I thought I could get away with it," he says. "The women that I didn't cheat on were the women that I loved and they were my best friends. If you feel you're loved and understood, you don't want to defile that relationship by cheating and being untrustworthy."

Instead of wives' employing stealthy tactics to catch husbands on the make, Santagati suggests they invest that time and energy getting to know and understand their men.

He urges wives to be their husband's playmate, lover and best friend and also to set boundaries regarding the behavior they will and will not accept from him in their relationship.

"Let him know that you're a great woman and you're going to have a lot of fun, you're going to be sexy, but you don't share," he says. "It's a special gift you're giving him. If he shares himself with another person, he's done.

"If you're so close to him and he thinks you're the sexiest thing on Earth, he won't even think about cheating."

Consider the goal

Wives have to decide which outcome is most important -- catching their spouse in the act or making their marriage better, says Don-David Lusterman, a psychologist practicing in Baldwin and author of "Infidelity: A Survival Guide" (MJF Books).

He suggests they start by looking inward. "If it gets to the point where you have to spy on your partner, you had best stop and go back and examine your own behavior in your marriage," Lusterman says. Have you silently tolerated bad behavior from him in the past, or have you been too busy to notice that he's feeling bored or adrift?

Then Lusterman suggests going to your husband for a heart-to-heart. "Start with a really good attempt to talk about your marriage itself," he says. "You don't talk about whether he's having an affair. You talk about whether you're having a marriage."

Keep the courtship going and make private time for each other, Lusterman says.

Couples therapy also may be an option, he says, "as long as two people have a wish to get the marriage to a better place. Keykatcher is easier to use since you simply place it in-line with the keyboard and then access it's memory to retried data.
Suffolk County Private Investigator Nassau County

Private Investigator Long Island Surveillance Seminar

Update Week of May 12
To everyone involved in the surveillance seminar in Suffolk County for private investigators and all the others; Thank you all for your expertise and the entertaining stories! An investigator is still needed to be the eyes and to document actions. Yes, the global positioning tells us where the vehicle is. But it does not tell us where the person is or what he/she is doing. GPS is cost effective because it has a flat daily rate. That eliminates the need for a second agent to be in the field. It is a pure money saver.
Suffolk County Private Investigator Nassau County

Private Investigator Long Island - "Ancient" Vehicle Tracking Device Story

Here's a long, but sort of funny story for the few law enforcement agents who, like myself, were early adapters of electronic surveillance.
Recently, a bunch of us former agents of law enforcement got together for a little reunion of retired NYPD cops and detectives. As these rituals go, it starts with dinner at a centrally located establishment and ends up a party of reminiscing. This one particular story, I decided to share:
In the days before GPS and even before "Lo-Jack," there was a device known commonly as s a "bird dog." It was, in fact, an early adaptation of a lo-jack. It was a small cast iron box that housed electronics along with three 9V batteries. This was sealed with a steal cover held on by two screws. A thin antenna attached to the back and could be swiveled to adapt to any position. It was attached to an incredibly strong magnet that would slap onto and hold itself to the frame of the vehicle. This device would transmit the location of the vehicle, but only within about a mile, in New York City.
The receiving end of this contraption was incredibly prehistoric! It consisted of a large metal briefcase that opened to reveal a "radar like" circular display that consisted of many tiny lights, arranged in a circular pattern. Separately, there were four large antennas, each attached to a magnetic base. Each antenna had a long coaxial type cable wired into it. The idea was to place the four antennas on the roof of the vehicle (yea, real covert)in a square pattern. The four cables would be fed through a window, and attached to the inside of the brief case unit.
With everything set to go, the idea was to turn the base unit on and watch the little circular light pattern. It was simple: if the light blinked at the 3 o'clock position, the vehicle was to your right. If it was at 11 o'clock, then the vehicle was ahead, but slightly to your left. Primitive as compared to today's devices, and quite simple, but believe it or not, it worked!
So after testing it on some of the team members vehicles, I had the tracker mastered! We even realized that we could put the antennas on the trunk of the covert vehicle, making it slightly less noticeable (but not much). So now it was time to put it into action.
The first vehicle we needed to track this way, was a very difficult subject. A high level Colombian narcotics importer who became a millionaire by operating a large New York "cell" of the Medellin cartel. He had moved up the so-called ranks by being smart, ruthless and being able to avoid arrest from several federal investigations. He was an expert at counter-surveillance and was nearly impossible to tail. Being the young determined detectives we were, we refused to accept defeat! So we tried this "new" technological dream..the bird dog.
Well, there I was, all set with new batteries installed, sliding under the vehicle and slapping the device in place. I positioned the antenna in just the right way and poof..it broke!!! The antenna snapped at the base. OK..no problem, let's go back to our tech guys and get a new antenna. No such luck. Seems each antenna is "cut" specifically to that particular unit. Therefore, we had to send the unit back to the manufacturer and have a new antenna cut, at a cost of several hundred dollars and 2 weeks waiting!
When it made its way back to us, we were ready to go. Again, I slid under and successfully attached it. We followed the subject all day. One problem was that the batteries lasted only a day. So before the night ended, I had to find the opportunity to retrieve the device, open it, replace the batteries and seal the cover with silicone. Then head back under the vehicle and place it there again. Yes, this was a twice daily routine for me. It was dangerous and nerve racking, to say the least. But it wouldn't last.
One bright spring day in 1991, we followed the subject to a repair shop. He pulled the vehicle in and a mechanic put it on the lift. At that point, I believe I began to perspire profusely. Sure enough, the mechanic noticed a strange object in the rear of the vehicle. I watched as he called the subject over and they both looked at the device. The mechanic then pulled the unit off, realized it was some sort of tracking device and simultaneously, they both looked out in all directions and immediately thereafter, closed the bay doors! That is what's commonly known as taking a major burn! Needless to say, the device was never retrieved.
I guess the point of the story is to make some of you aware of just how far technology has come. Today's GPS units are very small, no antenna, easily hidden and incredibly accurate, with batteries lasting weeks. For those in the field, I figured you may find it amusing.
Oh yes, in case you were wondering..we arrested him on federal conspiracy charges after a very successful eavesdropping case on his underlings.

Posted by Suffolk County Private Investigator

Long Island Investigations, Inc., A Private Investigator Long Island

When you need assets found or if you have a cheating spouse, or any other issue that needs a private investigator, give us a call. This is my own opinion, based on my knowledge of the common resources and information received from clients who spent money online and were disappointed with the information they received, or did not receive.
Some public internet databases are somewhat informative. Some are acceptable for things such as finding a past friend or school mate, a phone number etc., so long as the need for recent information is not needed(like they moved recently) Some others though are not as good. Regardless, the publicly available searches are not as comprehensive or complete as resources available to licensed private investigators with the better databases.
The databases we use as professionals, are available to licensed investigators or their corporations (such as insurance companies) as well as, of course, law enforcement agencies. They are quite accurate, up to date and a great resource for investigations such as finding people, background checks, criminal records, warrants, properties, New York State criminal records (New York State Court Administration, the only real source)and boat load of other information.
A background search done by Long Island Investigations, will give you much more information, such as NYS department of motor vehicles information, associates, deeds, tax liens, bankruptcies, business associates pending civil cases and so much more information that is not available through the other information resources.
So before you plop down money for on online data service, think about using a professional licensed agency.
Call us for your background or criminal check.
Long Island Private investigator, Serving Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York City

Private Investigator Suffolk County, Nassau County and now Westchester County

Long Island Investigations, Inc., has expanded it's service area to include not only New York City, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, but also lower Westchester County.

Listening Devices and Recorders Revisited

There have recently been many inquiries about covert recording. Hey, you know..it's Summer! And based on that, we vacation just like the rest of the world. Plus, we have been keeping so busy here that the day just never seems to be long enough.
For the third consecutive summer, I am amazed at the change in the types of cases that are contracted in June, July and August. Matrimonial seems to slow a bit (why? read the post dated July 1), but there is such an increase in insurance investigation cases!!! WHY??? Do the civil courts schedule everything for the summer? NO, in fact they don't. So can someone explain this overload? Don't the lawyers go on vacation too?

Cell Phone Records No More

This subject has been beaten to death. But let me once again tell you all.
Cell phone records are private! Cell phone records can no longer(and haven't been for a while)accessible. A recent bill was signed prohibiting anyone from obtaining the records. Of course, law enforcement can still get them by subpoena, as should be. But as for PI's...forget it.
Also, recent legislation has introduced a new "privacy and cell phone" issue: CNA's. CNA's, or Caller Name and Address (better known professionally as subscriber information)may soon be off limits as well.
To some, this is viewed as a real problem. It may have been a great tool, but there are plenty of ways to conduct an investigation without cell phone records. I imagine we are all realizing that now. If you think about it, it is actually a plus for this industry in many ways. After all, additional investigation means additional investigative hours.
Posted by private investigator Nassau County Suffolk County

Bugging, Eavesdropping in the Corporate World

Bugging, Eavesdropping in the Corporate World

From the New York Times:

Paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. It starts when you're always afraid. -- Stephen Stills

Life used to be nice at Wal-Mart. Competitors could not match its prices. Suppliers begged for the privilege of selling to it. Local governments used tax-exempt financing to lure stores. A soaring share price made low-level employees rich, and the Walton family became one of the wealthiest in the world.

In the 1990s, under David Glass, the successor to the founder Sam Walton, Wal-Mart stock rose more than 1,100 percent, a compound growth rate of almost 30 percent a year. When Mr. Glass stepped down in January 2000, he was hailed as one of the greatest corporate bosses ever.

Since then, plenty has gone right under his successor, H. Lee Scott Jr. Last year, Wal-Mart earned more than $11 billion, twice what it made in Mr. Glass's last year at the helm. It is the largest retailer in the world.

But its stock has lagged.

And now we are learning that paranoia has set in at Wal-Mart. The otherwise cost-conscious company spent millions to spy on employees and critics.

First we learned that a Wal-Mart employee taped phone calls between Michael Barbaro, a New York Times reporter, and Wal-Mart officials. This came after The Times reported on a Wal-Mart memo that suggested such clever tactics as forcing all shop clerks to spend some time hauling shopping carts in from the parking lot -- the better to weed out unhealthy workers who might submit health insurance claims.

Wal-Mart fired the employee it said was responsible for taping the calls, a man named Bruce Gabbard, and said his actions were unauthorized. Then Mr. Gabbard started talking to The Wall Street Journal, saying the department he worked for had spied on critics. Wal-Mart quickly issued apologies to the critics and got a judge to order Mr. Gabbard to stop talking.

Mr. Gabbard said he told a Wal-Mart lawyer that ''I'm the guy listening to the board of directors when Lee Scott is excused from the room.''

Does that mean that Mr. Scott authorized spying on his own board when it was discussing his performance? If so, it would be a shocking breach of corporate etiquette and governance.

For a few days after that quote appeared, Wal-Mart declined to comment. But eventually a company spokeswoman, Mona Williams, did issue a denial: ''We never would have authorized'' bugging board meetings, she said, and Mr. Scott never listened to any such tapes.

''As far as we know,'' she said, Mr. Gabbard ''never shared the information with anyone else.''

On the day Mr. Scott was named president and chief executive, the company's share price was over $65. Now it is under $48. Mr. Scott has reported profits of $13.9 million from cashing in options, but those were issued before he became the boss.

Of the 3.6 million options granted to Mr. Scott since he received the top job, just 415,627 options would be worth anything if exercised now, and they are not in the money by very much. The rest are under water.

During his tenure, the Morgan Stanley retail index, which covers most large American store chains, is up about 180 percent. Wal-Mart is down more than 25 percent.

Even more painful, Wal-Mart is getting blasted from all sides. Unions, angry at the company's successful efforts to keep them out, have been forced to make concessions to keep Wal-Mart competitors in business. They complain about Wal-Mart workers on Medicaid, the government health program for low-income people, and encourage cities to keep Wal-Mart out. A class-action suit by women claiming employment discrimination is pending.

Trying to mend fences on the left, Wal-Mart has angered some on the right. One group that got a Wal-Mart apology this month is upset over Mr. Scott's comments favorable to government-financed health care and the company's efforts to force suppliers to reduce carbon emissions. It says Wal-Mart has quotas to assure the hiring of women and minorities and gives money to gay rights groups.

Wal-Mart is successful, but Mr. Scott's inability to convert that success to a rising share price may have colored his judgment. It appears that the company grew paranoid about its critics, and created a security operation that went too far. At best, management controls were sorely inadequate.

It is time for the Wal-Mart board to bring in an outside investigator, one without previous ties to the company. That investigator should learn, and tell the public, what went on in the spying operation, and just who knew the details.

A generation ago, when President Richard M. Nixon lost his job because of a spying operation that went too far, it was Senator Howard H. Baker Jr. who repeatedly asked a question that must be asked at Wal-Mart: ''What did the president know, and when did he know it?''

Identity Theft, What to Do

Posted By Suffolk County Private Investigator

Identity Theft Center.orgIdentity Theft, Free Information:
If you are the victim of Identity Theft, there are a few things you need to know.
First, notify the proper authorities. This is a serious crime that requires the resources only available to law enforcement. You should be contacting the special frauds units, in particular, as precinct level personnel may not have the expertise. Police and prosecutors offices in general, both have special fraud units.
When a family member of mine became a victim of identity theft, I did not hesitate to notify the Special Frauds Unit locally. I certainly did not open an investigation on my own. You have already had your privacy breached, your credit ruined and a boat-load of other issues. It certainly shouldn't and doesn't help you to pay further.
Services for identity theft are free from the right resources!
Identity theft, as we well know, has become a tremendous problem in the US today. The Senate made that possible Friday night when they approved legislation similar to a bill passed by the House.

The Senate bill increases the proposed fine to $500,000 and includes imprisonment up to 10 years in cases involving domestic abuse. The penalties can even be greater if classified as a special circumstance. The bill also details penalties and prison time for anyone who buys or sells the deceptively acquired phone records. The caveat is that those involved must know the records were obtained deceptively.

This legislation specifically addresses the act of ‘pretexting’ to obtain a person’s telephone records without permission.

“My main concern is that it is still not clear how the term ‘telephone records’ will be defined. Will this term mean toll records, name and address, or any other information maintained by the phone company?” Jimmie Mesis, PI Magazine Editor-in-Chief

This definition will certainly become much clearer before it heads to the Oval Office for the President’s signature.

As expected, there is an exemption for law enforcement. However, there is also an exemption for private detectives, but only if they are hired to acquire the confidential records by law enforcement.

Great Idea! See if someone lurks inside. Check the floor of the rear seats.

Get a sounding device. Criminals don't like attention being drawn to them. A loud hand held device such as an alarm or horn, when used, will draw attention to you and may cause the criminal to flee.

Don't place items in the car, and then return for more shopping. Some criminals specifically look for this action. They look for people placing items into the car and then returning to the mall for more shopping. Those gifts may not be there when you return.

Be aware of your surroundings. Especially when walking to your vehicle.

Be sure to have your cell phone handy.

Use common sense if you are approached by someone. In other words, beware of "scams." There are plenty of people looking to take your hard earned money through scams or confidence games.

Lastly, beware of other drivers. Tempers may be high with all the stress of traffic and crowds. Avoid conflict with other drivers on the road or or in parking lots. Maybe...then again..maybe not. We can find out by conducting surveillance, documenting actions with video, photo, Global Positioning satellite technology and computer forensics.
Common Signs, aside from the obvious perfume smell or lipstick. Those are easy, obvious and avoided by the careful ones.
But what about the careful cheater? What about the experienced ones who have already been caught and know how to avoid the mistakes they previously made?
Here are some signs:

1. Sex drive has increased or decreased recently (yes, it can be either)
2. Picks a fight in order to storm out of the house. (Guess where he/she's going?)
3. Suspicious cell phone calls from restricted numbers
4. Finds excuses to leave the house that he never used to use. (He wants privacy on the cell phone)
5. If you have sex, something has changed. A new act or position. (Something new learned? If so, from who?)
6. Suddenly works overtime (used to hate it and tried to avoid it) Now he/she loves it and works late often.
7. Suddenly has an interest in his/her appearance. Maybe goes to the gym, wears nicer clothes, cleaned his car inside and out and never has before. Is your significant other trying to impress someone?
8. Short tempered and never was before
9. Runs out of vacation or sick time at work(It was used for secret meetings with the "other")

These are just a few signs. Just do a search for "married but looking" in Google and you will see.
How do you check your computer to see if a spouse is using these services? Simple: Computer Forensics. The process of taking your hard drive and cloning it. Then, installing the new cloned drive into your computer, and taking the original for investigations. Then, with sophisticated software, removing all the data from the drive. You can get all the chats, pictures, emails etc., including a ton of deleted items, so long as the drive was not "washed." Most people think that once the chat is over or an email is deleted, the evidence is gone...well it's not.

DNA

Use of DNA has become quite common in adoption and identification cases.
